Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Older plumbing configurations are common in this county's housing stock, and a repair call often turns on what the contractor finds once the water heater is accessible: corroded fittings, non-standard connections, or supply line work that reflects multiple rounds of repair rather than a single clean installation. Half the homes in Choctaw County, Mississippi were built in 1980 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That history matters because parts specified for the original setup are frequently out of production, and a contractor has to work out whether to adapt what is there or replace the surrounding connections before the heater itself gets touched.

The Parts of a Water Heater a Contractor Checks During Repair

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small single-story house showing interior rooms with sinks, a toilet, furniture and a tall cylindrical water heater with a flue pipe extending through the dark shingled roof.

The tank is what most homeowners picture first: a large insulated cylinder, usually in a utility closet, basement, or garage, that holds water and keeps it hot until a tap opens. Inside the tank, a burner assembly or heating element does the actual heating, and when either one fails, water comes out cold or lukewarm regardless of how the thermostat is set.

The thermostat itself sits against the tank and tells the heating source when to fire and when to stop. A pressure relief valve mounts on the side or top of the tank and opens automatically if pressure builds too high. The anode rod hangs inside the tank and slows corrosion of the tank walls, and it is often the first thing a contractor pulls when the water smells off or the tank is aging.

The drawing shows a typical water heater layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to the specific unit and installation in your home.
